Do it anyway

“People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.
In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.” – from Mother Teresa’s wall

Lines in the sand

When does help become something else entirely?

I've been making major changes in my life this past year and I'm on the path to another big one. But sometime it feels like the line I'm walking is drawn in sand, and I'm being carried along by a gust of wind. Helpful as the wind is, it can also blow the line away and leave you stranded in the open with no path at all. And what then?

Adventures? Or just exposure to the elements?

Three days till the beach!

And I could not be more ready. I am so burned out on my job.

But I did just apply to a teacher certification program...wonder if you guys would have predicted that for me!

California, here I come!

So I leave Saturday for a whirlwind trip of the American southwest! Well, kind of. My cousin is graduating from high school and my dad, brother and I are flying out early to see some National Parks. (We're a pretty nature-loving crowd of campers and hikers.) The plan is:

Sat - fly to Sacramento, drive to Yosemite. Brief tour of Yosemite.
Sun - Yosemite
Mon - Kings Canyon/Sequoia
Tue - drive through Death Valley, stay in VEGAS!
Wed - Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon
Thurs - Grand Canyon, drive to Phoenix
Fri - graduation
Sat - Phoenix (Tucson?)
Sun - fly back

I'm pretty excited :)

Ancestry...

So today I started a 2-week trail of Ancestry.com. Thus far, I've already learned that I come from a Dutch family that served as a Magistrate in New Amsterdam, and one fellow was initially convicted of treason but it was overturned after he proved he was a patriot. We have apparently been farmers since coming to this country in the 1650s and our original farm was in Yonkers.

Pretty cool stuff.....

I fucking love the Northeast.

I just saw an MTA train and it made me unreasonably happy.

God, I want to live up here.
Now if only I could convince Shaun.

How to make an impression on your man-friend

Step 1: wait for him to get on a three hour flight with no access to text/email/facebook

Step 2: after he is safely out of contact, compose a really really really long text about your feelings, the state of the relationship, and how you are not needy. Hit send.

Step 3: wait two and a half more hours for him to land. Freak out entire time (that part is an educated guess)

Step 4: when plane lands and phone are allowed, message will pop through. Girl in seat next to your man friend (me) will notice message because it's SO LONG and manage to get the gist of it while trying not to look like she's looking. She will then watch him look not entirely surprised, sort of laugh/scoff, and move on to next message.

Step 5: make sure to call to see if he got message. He won't answer this call.

Especially effective if man-friend is a northeasterner, late 20s to mid 30s reading an Entrepreneur magazine.

Job hunting.

Ugh, so back in November I applied to a new position at my current employer. 3 weeks later, I interviewed and was told they'd have a decision by the end of the year. Then by the end of January. Heard yesterday (only because I called to ask) that they wouldn't know till mid February.

Found out this morning that they actually filled the position with someone else at some point in the last 2 weeks.

Thanks, assholes. Way to let me know.

Apparently I wasn't enthusiastic enough--excuse me for not being a damn cheerleader. Not my personality to fall all over you begging.

I'm so pissed.
I'd just given myself a big pep talk this morning about being more positive when this happened, and about how even though I don't like my job I should just be grateful because it's only for a little while longer.

Now it feels like I'm trapped. Or like they want to pin me in this spot.
